The Historic Wellington Hotel is located in the Salamanca neighbourhood, named after its promoter, a person who developed a new model of urbanism on land acquired by him from such a distance from the centre of the city that it made one think in those years that it would never be a viable location for the Madrid of 1857 in a Spain reigned by Isabel II.
The project of D. José de Salamanca is today the most famous, stately and elegant district of Madrid.
Just one block away from the Wellington Hotel, we find the calm and tranquility that emanate from the historic Retiro Park of Madrid. The location couldn’t be better than the innumerable fashion boutiques and antique shops in its most emblematic streets, such as Serrano, Ortega y Gasset or Velázquez. Enjoy the most important shopping area in the city with advantageous discounts and preferential attention.
The situation is also ideal considering the so-called Triangle of Art, made up of the most notable museums in Madrid, the Prado, the Thyssen and the Reina Sofia Art Centre. In a place where customers could reach on foot from the Retiro Park by a wide and majestic boulevard.
A building with two proportional, noble and highly profitable façades was constructed, which today makes the Wellington Hotel a listed and protected building within the architectural heritage of the city of Madrid.
After the first years of hotel operation, such was the demand that in 1976, at 6 Velázquez Street, what we know as the enlargement of the current Wellington Hotel was inaugurated.
